Biophilia: Why we need plants in our space
Biophilia simply means one's love for nature. the high rise in urban living has resulted in limited attention to the importance of plants in our surroundings. most especially our homes and our workspaces.
Trees are cut down daily, and there is more pollution now than ever, no wonder everyone is usually so stressed and grumpy, most especially those of us who reside in Lagos.
We sometimes undermine the benefit of having plants in our surroundings, myself included, until recently, when I came to realise that even the smallest presence of a growing plant (not a weed people!) can help boost your mood.
Having plants in our spaces, makes us feel like we are not alone, even though some of us live alone.
We need plants to improve our well-being and plants are known as anti-stressor. That helps to improve our cognitive thinking.
Plants help reduce stress and anxiety: They can also help you lower your blood pressure, and feel calmer and self-aligned. They can help you sleep better: some plants give off oxygen at night allowing you to have a better night of sleep.
I just love plants so much, and I am drawn to them. They give me this sense of calmness, that I like so much, just like artwork. And I believe that as an interior stylist, it is normal for me to be obsessed with them both.
So here are five reasons you should consider becoming a plant parent!
• Plants help to reduce stress and anxiety
• It helps to boost productivity and improves mood.
• Helps to fight cold and allergies; plants such as bamboo plants, lilies, etc.
• Having plants in your space can help decrease depression.
•Helps promote mental well-being; the ordinary act of caring for live plants can help improve our mental well-being.
Finally, it is important to note that having plants in your space isn't enough to bring about total wholeness of the mind, however, this is just an aspect of bringing about mental well-being in us.
